Vác is perfect choice for one-day trip from Budapest as the town is located just 34 kilometers north of the Hungarian capital on the left bank of the Danube river. It is easily accessible by train from Nyugati Train Station in Budapest.
Vác is a neat and peaceful town with gracefully aged buildings that grab your attention with picturesque details and textures.
This town with about 33.000 inhabitants is most famous for its cathedral, built between 1761 and 1777 in neo-Classic, late-Baroque style, the Church of the Whites and the Convent, the church of Dominican monks, The Triumphal Arch constructed for the reception of Maria Theresa.
On Március 15 Square, the main square of the town, there is a wine museum, which features a private collection of old Hungarian wines and champagnes. In this museum we learned that Hungary was the second country after France to start production of champagne.
Beside the Triumphal Arch there is another place of interest in Vác: prison that was originally built in the beginning of 19th century for the noble youth convicts. Today it is the second largest maximum security prison in Hungary.
From Vác you can take a ferryboat to the other side of the Danube, and then go by bus to Szentendre, another popular destination for one day trips from Budapest.
