Szentendre is a small town in the outskirts of Budapest. We made a trip to this town last week to see ethnic neighbourhood, to test new bikes and ourselves. You see, there is a bicycle lane that stretches from Danube embankment in Budapest right to the heart of Szentendre. We just could not resist this temptation.
For many years Szentendre was a town of artists, and home to Serbian settlers. And it still is a town of arts and museums – there are 14 museums and art galleries there, including Margit Kovács Museum (pottery), Serb Clerical Museum, and the ArtMill.
You may reach the town by suburban train (HÉV) - the trip from Batthyány tér in Budapest (red metro line) will take you approximately 40 minutes. Or rent a bike from one of rent-a-bike companies in Budapest.
Though we found Szentendre not really ethnic, it was still a fascination. It was full of quiet happiness. The people we saw were enjoying simple pleasures of life - Danube, landscape, sunny day, ice-cream, fried sausages and cold beer in an ice-cold glass. As simple as that.
