Budapest Night Out

Budapest night life is growing and getting bigger and more diverse each year. It is of course at its most active during summer heat waves, when crowds go pub crawling well into small hours. Here is our photo report from the Budapest night hot spots.

Downtown area around Basilica is home to upscale restaurants and bars.

It offers many options to start your night with fine dining and wining at one of many terraces.

Next to Basilica is another very popular spot at Erzsébet tér (square).

It is a very democratic spot popular with younger crowds coming with their own booze and guitars to socialize.

Sometimes the younger crowds use bushes as a toilet, and that's a disappointment we think you should know about.

Liszt Ferenc Square is the veteran of night life in Budapest, where the first classy restaurants and clubs were setting trends many years ago.

Today the square is lined with terraces on both sides where you can find cuisines for all tastes. But those come at prices above average and sometimes with bad waiters. It is nice and lively, but don't forget to check your bill before paying.

What Budapest is truly famous for are "kert" (garden) pubs, also called ruin bars.

The ruin bars are mostly located in the 7th district around The Great Synagogue. You will recognize them by many bikes and crowds at the entrance. If you want to try the taste of alternative night life in Budapest go to Kertesz utca.

enjoy all those kebabs we develop craving for on Saturday nights and meet people from around the world.

If you still can't get enough, there is more in the other downtown district by the Market Hall. Raday street is home to many cafes with terraces where you can try Hungarian foods and wines, or go for burger, or pasta, or what-not.

Terraces on Raday are also good places to watch football games with crowds. They usually start closing at about 11-12 in the night.

Bean soup

A warming lunch for this wintery spring—bean soup at Szatyor (XI. Bartók Béla út 36; Mon-Fri 12-01 Sat-Sun 14-01). Just make sure you check your change, because some waiters there suffer from dyscalculia: give you less and then even deny it. But soup is very good, yeah. 5 cafes in Budapest
